In dental laboratory terminology, the substructure (also called a coping or framework at the individual unit level) refers to the rigid inner core of a restoration that provides structural integrity. It is designed to fit precisely over the prepared tooth or implant abutment and serves as the bonding surface for aesthetic veneering materials.
