Abrasion resistance is a critical performance parameter for restorative dental materials subjected to occlusal loading, toothbrushing, and dietary abrasion. It is typically quantified through standardised wear simulation protocols (e.g., ACTA wear machine, OHSU wear test) and expressed as volumetric or linear material loss (μm or mm³). High abrasion resistance is desirable in posterior composites and ceramic occlusal surfaces; however, an excessively hard material may cause excessive wear of opposing enamel. Editors should distinguish between 'abrasion resistance' (resistance to surface wear) and 'abrasion' as a clinical tooth wear aetiology, which are related but contextually distinct uses. The term 'wear resistance' is a common and acceptable synonym in the literature.
