Bis-Acryl Composite

A dimethacrylate-based resin material commonly used for chairside fabrication of provisional restorations, distinguished by its self-curing mechanism and improved aesthetics over PMMA.

Full Definition

Bis-acryl composites are two-component, auto-polymerising materials formulated from bisphenol A-based dimethacrylate monomers and inorganic fillers. They are widely used for provisional crown and bridge fabrication due to their superior surface finish and colour stability compared to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). In editorial contexts, the term is frequently hyphenated as 'bis-acryl'; authors should be consistent in hyphenation throughout a manuscript. Editors must not confuse bis-acryl with bis-GMA (bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate), which is a specific monomer used in permanent composite resins.

Usage note: Always hyphenate as 'bis-acryl'. Do not abbreviate to 'BA' without defining the abbreviation. Distinguish clearly from 'bis-GMA', which is a permanent-restoration monomer, not a provisional material.
