Ferrule Effect

The biomechanical reinforcement of an endodontically treated tooth conferred by a circumferential band of sound coronal dentine encircled by the crown margin, reducing the risk of root fracture under occlusal loading.

Full Definition

The ferrule effect refers to the resistance to vertical and horizontal fracture forces imparted when a full-coverage crown engages at least 1.5–2 mm of sound, parallel-walled coronal dentine circumferentially above the finish line. The term is borrowed from the metal band (ferrule) used in woodworking to prevent splitting of tool handles under impact. In dental materials and restorative dentistry literature, the ferrule effect is a critical consideration when selecting crown materials and post-and-core systems for endodontically treated teeth. Editors should note 'ferrule' is frequently misspelt as 'ferule' (a different object) or 'ferrul'; both are errors. The effect is distinct from the post and core build-up itself.
