A high-strength glass-ceramic material containing lithium disilicate crystals, widely used for aesthetic all-ceramic crowns, veneers, and inlays.

Full Definition

Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics (e.g., IPS e.max) consist of a glassy matrix reinforced by interlocking lithium disilicate (Li₂Si₂O₅) crystals constituting approximately 70% by volume, conferring flexural strengths of 360–400 MPa. The material is processed either by pressing (heat-pressing technique) or by CAD/CAM milling of partially crystallised blocks followed by a final crystallisation firing. Its translucency and fluorescence mimic natural dentition closely, making it the material of choice for anterior and premolar all-ceramic restorations. Editors must hyphenate 'lithium disilicate' only when used as a compound modifier and should not confuse it with leucite-reinforced ceramics.
