A monolithic restoration is fabricated entirely from one material — commonly high-translucency zirconia, lithium disilicate, or a full-cast metal alloy — eliminating the interface between core and veneering ceramic that predisposes layered restorations to chipping. The monolithic design trades some aesthetic flexibility for improved mechanical reliability, particularly for posterior restorations subject to high occlusal loads. Editors should be precise when authors use 'full-contour restoration' as a synonym, as context may distinguish between cast metal full-contour crowns and monolithic ceramic crowns.
