Polyether

A hydrophilic elastomeric impression material characterised by a stiff set, high detail reproduction, and good dimensional accuracy, used primarily in fixed prosthodontic impressions.

Full Definition

Polyether impression materials cure through a cationic ring-opening polymerisation of aziridine end groups, producing a crosslinked network with inherent hydrophilicity. Their stiffness on setting is notably higher than silicone-based materials, which can complicate removal from undercuts. In editorial use, 'polyether' should not be used as a generic term for impression materials; it refers specifically to this chemical class. Editors must distinguish polyether from polyvinyl siloxane (addition silicone), which is chemically distinct. Trade names such as Impregum™ are common in manuscripts and should be followed by the generic category in parentheses on first mention per most journal styles.
