Polymerisation Depth of Cure

The maximum depth within a light-cured resin material at which an adequate degree of conversion is achieved by a single curing exposure.

Full Definition

Depth of cure describes how far light energy penetrates a light-activated resin composite to achieve sufficient polymerisation throughout the material's thickness. It is particularly critical for bulk-fill composites, which are marketed with enhanced depth-of-cure claims. The ISO 4049 scraping method is the standard test, measuring the cured depth of a cylindrical sample after uncured material is removed. Editors should note that 'depth of cure' is distinct from 'degree of conversion,' which measures the proportion of double bonds that have reacted. Manufacturers often report depth of cure in millimetres; editors should ensure units are consistent and that the test standard is cited.
