Polymerisation shrinkage refers to the reduction in volume that resin-based dental materials undergo as monomer molecules link to form polymer chains during light or chemical curing. Typical composite resins shrink by 1.5–5% volumetrically, generating internal stresses that can cause marginal gaps, cuspal deflection, and post-operative sensitivity. Editors should use the '-isation' British English spelling in journals following UK style guides, and '-ization' in American English publications, confirming the house style before standardising.
