The study of the flow and deformation behaviour of dental materials, particularly relevant to impression materials, cements, and composites under clinical placement conditions.

Rheology describes how materials flow and deform when subjected to stress, which is critical in dentistry for predicting the clinical handling of cements, impression materials, and flowable composites. A material's viscosity, pseudoplasticity, and thixotropic properties all fall within rheological assessment. Editors must understand that 'rheology' refers to the scientific discipline, not a property itself. In dental materials literature, authors often discuss 'rheological properties' or 'rheological behaviour' rather than 'the rheology' as a standalone noun. Correct usage distinguishes dynamic viscosity from rheological terms such as yield stress or shear-thinning behaviour.

Usage note: Do not conflate 'rheology' (the discipline) with 'viscosity' (a single measurable property). Authors sometimes incorrectly write 'the material's rheology was high' — this should be revised to specify the property, e.g. 'viscosity' or 'flow resistance'.
