Retrograde Filling

A restorative material placed into the prepared root-end cavity during periapical surgery to seal the root canal system from the apex.

Full Definition

In periapical (retrograde) surgery, once the root tip has been resected, a small cavity is prepared in the root end using an ultrasonic tip, and a biocompatible material — most commonly mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or intermediate restorative material (IRM) — is condensed into this cavity. The term 'retrograde' refers to the apical-to-coronal direction of placement, in contrast to conventional orthograde root filling. Editors must not conflate 'retrograde filling' with 'root canal filling', as they describe distinct procedures. Correct terminology is important in insurance pre-authorisation documents and clinical audit reports.

Usage note: Distinguish from 'root canal filling' in all editorial and coding contexts. The direction of placement (apex-to-crown) is clinically and documentarily significant.
