Schneiderian Membrane

Pronunciation: shny-DEER-ee-an

The periosteal lining of the maxillary sinus; a critical anatomical structure in sinus lift surgery whose integrity must be preserved to prevent graft complications.

Full Definition

The Schneiderian membrane is the mucoperiosteally derived lining of the paranasal sinuses, first described by Conrad Victor Schneider. In oral surgery, it is most clinically relevant as the lining of the maxillary sinus during sinus floor augmentation procedures. Perforation of the Schneiderian membrane during a sinus lift is the most common intraoperative complication and is always documented in operative notes. Editors should note the correct eponymic capitalisation: 'Schneiderian' is always capitalised (derived from a proper noun). The term 'sinus membrane' is an acceptable informal synonym but should not replace the formal anatomical term in surgical or academic documents.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalise 'Schneiderian' as it is an eponym. Do not substitute 'sinus membrane' in formal surgical or academic writing without style guidance.

In Context

  • "A 3 mm perforation of the Schneiderian membrane was noted during the lateral window approach and repaired with a resorbable collagen membrane." — Operative Report
  • "The editor queried the author's use of lowercase 'schneiderian', confirming that as an eponym the adjective should be capitalised throughout the manuscript." — Journal Manuscript Review
