Subperiosteal dissection describes the technique of elevating the periosteum away from cortical bone as a continuous layer during oral and maxillofacial procedures. A periosteal elevator is used to peel the periosteum cleanly, preserving its integrity so that the flap retains its blood supply. The technique is essential for procedures such as third molar removal, cyst enucleation, and preprosthetic surgery. In surgical reports and operative notes, this term must not be confused with supraperiosteal dissection, which occurs above the periosteum in a different tissue plane.
