Beneficiary assignment, often called 'assignment of benefits,' is a written authorisation in which a dental patient directs their insurance carrier to pay reimbursement funds directly to the treating provider rather than to the patient themselves. It is a routine section of new-patient paperwork and insurance claim forms. Editors must distinguish between assignment of benefits (payment direction) and release of information (disclosure authorisation), as the two are separate consent actions that are often handled on the same form. Incorrect interchanging of these terms in patient-facing documents is a common editorial error.
