Dual Arch Impression

A single-tray dental impression technique that simultaneously captures both the preparation tooth and opposing arch occlusal relationships, used in indirect restorative procedures.

Full Definition

A dual arch impression (also called a double-arch or triple tray impression) is a restorative procedure in which a specially designed tray captures the prepared tooth, adjacent teeth, and the opposing arch in one step while the patient bites down. This technique reduces the number of impressions required and inherently records the bite relationship. The term appears in clinical chart notes, patient education materials, and billing narratives supporting crown and fixed prosthodontic procedures. Editors should note that 'dual arch impression' and 'full arch impression' are not interchangeable; a full arch impression captures one complete arch with a standard tray, whereas a dual arch impression captures portions of both arches simultaneously.

Usage

Usage note: Do not confuse 'dual arch impression' with 'bite-wing,' which is a radiographic term. Also distinguish from 'bite registration,' which records occlusion using wax or silicone but does not capture tooth anatomy.
