Centric Relation

The maxillomandibular relationship in which the condyles are in their most superior, anterior, and unstrained position within the glenoid fossae, used as a reproducible reference point in prosthodontic and occlusal records.

Full Definition

Centric relation (CR) is a jaw position defined by the relationship of the mandible to the maxilla when the temporomandibular joint condyles are in their most superoanterior position in the articular fossae, independent of tooth contact. It is a reproducible, ligamentous position that clinicians use as a stable reference for constructing dentures, occlusal splints, and full-mouth rehabilitations. Editors must distinguish centric relation from 'centric occlusion' (CO), which is the tooth contact position, and from 'intercuspal position' (ICP), the position of maximum tooth interdigitation. The CR–CO discrepancy is a significant concept in occlusal assessment. These terms appear in prosthodontic laboratory prescriptions, study model records, and implant treatment planning notes.

Usage

Usage note: Do not use 'centric relation' and 'centric occlusion' interchangeably. In modern prosthodontic literature, 'retruded contact position' is considered an outdated synonym and should not be introduced as a preferred term.
