A polyacid-modified composite resin that combines limited fluoride release with resin composite handling properties, used primarily in paediatric restorations.

Full Definition

A compomer is a dental restorative material that incorporates polyacid-modifiable monomers into a resin composite matrix, providing a degree of fluoride release lower than conventional glass ionomer cements but with the aesthetic and handling characteristics of composite resins. The term is a portmanteau of 'composite' and 'ionomer', and editors must be aware it is not interchangeable with either. Compomers are predominantly indicated for class III and V cavities and paediatric restorations. In British dental literature, the material is also called a 'polyacid-modified composite resin'. Editors should ensure the term is not hyphenated and is not confused with RMGI.

Usage note: Do not hyphenate 'compomer'. It is a distinct material class; do not use as a synonym for RMGI or composite resin. The plural is 'compomers'.
