Bisecting Angle Technique

A periapical radiographic projection method in which the X-ray beam is directed perpendicular to an imaginary line that bisects the angle formed between the long axis of the tooth and the image receptor.

The bisecting angle technique is an alternative to the paralleling technique for capturing periapical radiographs, used particularly when anatomical constraints prevent correct receptor placement. The operator identifies the angle formed between the tooth's long axis and the receptor, then aims the central ray at 90 degrees to the bisecting line of that angle. Although it introduces geometric distortion—most notably foreshortening or elongation—it remains useful in patients with shallow palates or limited mouth opening. Editors reviewing clinical dental radiology reports should note that the technique name is always written as 'bisecting angle technique' (lower case, three words) and must not be conflated with the paralleling technique. It is referenced extensively in radiographic technique guidelines published by professional dental bodies.
