Cervical Burnout

A radiographic artefact producing a false appearance of radiolucency at the cervical margin of a tooth, caused by the geometry of X-ray beam projection through the narrower neck of the tooth.

Full Definition

Cervical burnout is a radiographic artefact that mimics carious lesion or root resorption at the cervical region of a tooth. It occurs because the X-ray beam passes through less mineralised tooth structure at the cervical constriction, resulting in increased film darkening at that area. Editors reviewing clinical radiology reports must ensure it is not conflated with true cervical caries or external root resorption. The term is written as two words and should not be hyphenated in standard usage. Awareness of this artefact is critical when editing reports that discuss differential diagnoses at the cemento-enamel junction.
