The anterior projection of the mandibular ramus that can appear as a triangular radiopacity superimposed on the maxillary tuberosity region in panoramic radiographs.

Full Definition

The coronoid process is a flat, triangular bony projection arising from the anterior superior border of the mandibular ramus, serving as the insertion point for the temporalis muscle. In panoramic radiography, it commonly overlaps the posterior maxillary region due to the imaging geometry of the panoramic sweep, creating a radiopaque triangular shadow that may mimic a calcification or exostosis. Editors of panoramic radiograph interpretations must verify that the coronoid process is not erroneously described as a pathological finding in the maxillary tuberosity area. Correct anatomical labelling is critical in oral surgery reports, especially in discussions of third molar and implant planning.
