Cross-Sectional Imaging

Any radiographic modality that produces images representing slices through the body in planes other than conventional two-dimensional projections, including CBCT and medical CT.

Cross-sectional imaging refers to radiographic techniques that generate images depicting anatomical structures in axial, coronal, sagittal, or oblique planes by mathematically reconstructing data acquired from multiple angles. In dental radiology, the primary cross-sectional modality is cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), which provides three-dimensional volumetric data reconstructed into planar slices. Cross-sectional imaging is used for implant planning, assessment of bony pathology, third molar proximity to the inferior dental nerve, and temporomandibular joint evaluation. Editors working in dental radiology must hyphenate 'cross-sectional' consistently when used as a compound modifier before a noun (e.g., 'cross-sectional images') but not as a predicate adjective. It should not be used interchangeably with 'tomographic' without justification.
