Density (Radiographic)

The overall degree of blackening or brightness of a radiographic image, determined by the quantity of radiation reaching the receptor.

Full Definition

In conventional film-based dental radiography, radiographic density refers to the degree of film blackening, measured as optical density (OD). In digital radiography, the equivalent concept is image brightness or grey level. Correct density is essential for diagnostic accuracy; an underexposed (too light) or overexposed (too dark) image may obscure pathology. Editors should be aware that 'density' in radiography refers to the image characteristic, not to the physical density of a tissue—the terms 'radiopacity' and 'radiolucency' describe tissue properties, while 'density' describes the image. Confusion between radiographic density and physical material density is a common editorial error.
