Digital Subtraction Radiography

A computerised radiographic technique in which two images taken at different times are digitally aligned and subtracted from each other to reveal subtle changes in bone or soft tissue density.

Full Definition

Digital subtraction radiography (DSR) enhances the detection of minor changes between sequential radiographs by electronically removing identical structures and highlighting only the differences. When images are perfectly superimposed, unchanged structures cancel out, leaving only new or resolving lesions visible as bright or dark regions. The technique is particularly valuable in monitoring periodontal bone loss, periapical healing, and caries progression. Editors handling manuscripts on this topic should render the full term as 'digital subtraction radiography' (lower case, three words) and the abbreviation as 'DSR'. It must not be confused with digital radiography in general or with subtraction angiography, which is a separate cardiovascular imaging technique.
