Radiation dosimetry in dental radiology involves the systematic measurement or calculation of the radiation dose delivered to patients and personnel. Dosimetric quantities relevant to dental practice include absorbed dose (Gy), equivalent dose (Sv), and effective dose (Sv), the last of which accounts for the radiosensitivity of different tissues and is used for comparing the risk associated with different imaging modalities. Personal dosimeters (such as thermoluminescent dosimeters or optically stimulated luminescence devices) are worn by clinical staff to monitor occupational dose. Editors should note that 'dose' alone is ambiguous without specifying the quantity; 'effective dose' should be used when comparing patient risk across modalities.
