The inferior dental nerve (IDN), more formally termed the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), is a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3) that traverses the inferior dental (mandibular) canal within the mandible. Its radiographic identification is critical in pre-surgical planning for lower molar extractions, implant placement, and orthognathic surgery, as injury may result in paraesthesia or anaesthesia of the lower lip and chin. On panoramic radiographs the mandibular canal is typically identified as a radiolucent band with corticated borders; its relationship to third molar roots is routinely assessed using standardised criteria. In CBCT reporting, the precise three-dimensional relationship of the IDN to surgical structures must be described.

Usage note: 'Inferior dental nerve' is the traditional British anatomical term; 'inferior alveolar nerve' is the international Terminologia Anatomica standard. Editors should standardise per journal or institution style. Do not confuse with the 'mental nerve,' which is the terminal branch exiting at the mental foramen.
