Radiographic Contrast

The degree of difference in density or grey-scale value between adjacent areas on a radiographic image, which determines the visibility of anatomical structures and pathological changes.

Radiographic contrast encompasses both subject contrast (determined by differences in tissue thickness, density, and atomic number) and image contrast (influenced by beam energy, detector characteristics, and processing). High-contrast images show a wide range of grey values and are suited to distinguishing calcified tissues from soft tissue; low-contrast images are better for detecting subtle density differences within homogeneous tissues. Editors reviewing radiology manuscripts should note that 'contrast' alone is ambiguous—authors should specify 'radiographic contrast', 'subject contrast', or 'image contrast' as appropriate. The term is written as two words and is not to be confused with contrast medium (a pharmacological agent injected to enhance tissue visibility in other modalities).

Usage

Usage note: Disambiguate 'subject contrast' from 'image contrast' when precision is required. Never conflate with 'contrast medium'.
