Scatter Radiation

Secondary radiation produced when primary X-ray photons interact with matter and are deflected from their original path, degrading image contrast and contributing to patient and operator dose.

Scatter radiation arises primarily through Compton scattering, in which incoming X-ray photons collide with loosely bound electrons in tissues and are redirected at various angles with reduced energy. In dental radiography, scatter reduces image contrast by exposing the receptor to radiation carrying no useful diagnostic information. Collimation, the use of rectangular versus round position-indicating devices, and thyroid collar shielding are key strategies to minimise scatter dose. Editors of radiation protection documents should note that 'scatter' is distinct from 'leakage radiation' (which escapes the tube housing) and 'primary radiation' (the useful beam). Correct terminology is essential in regulatory submissions and patient information leaflets.

Usage note: Do not use 'stray radiation' as an interchangeable synonym in formal documents; 'stray radiation' encompasses both scatter and leakage and is a broader category. Specify the mechanism (Compton) when technical precision is required.
