They are published by bodies such as the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and incorporate factors including the patient's caries risk, periodontal status, and clinical presentation. Selection criteria should be distinguished from referral criteria, which govern onward referral to specialist services. Editors should note that 'guidelines' and 'selection criteria' are not synonymous — the latter has a specific regulatory weight in the radiation protection context.
