Ameloblast

Ameloblasts are highly differentiated columnar epithelial cells of the inner enamel epithelium that produce and deposit the enamel matrix—composed primarily of amelogenin, enamelin, and ameloblastin—which mineralises to form enamel during tooth development. Once enamel formation (amelogenesis) is complete, ameloblasts undergo programmed cell death, leaving mature enamel avascular and acellular and therefore incapable of self-repair. In dental research, ameloblasts are studied in the context of developmental enamel defects, genetic disorders such as amelogenesis imperfecta, and animal model studies of enamel organ biology. Editors working on histological or molecular biology manuscripts must distinguish ameloblasts from odontoblasts (dentine-forming cells) and cementoblasts (cementum-forming cells), as these are frequently confused. The spelling 'ameloblast' is invariable in standard usage; variants such as 'enamel-forming cell' are acceptable synonyms in non-specialist contexts.
