Crestal Bone Height

The vertical distance between a fixed reference point and the most coronal level of the alveolar bone crest, measured radiographically.

Crestal bone height is a radiographic measurement used in periodontal and implant research to quantify the extent of alveolar bone support around teeth or implants. It is typically measured from a reproducible anatomical reference, such as the cementoenamel junction or the implant shoulder, to the most coronal bone-to-root or bone-to-implant contact point. Serial measurements allow researchers to calculate bone loss or gain over time. Editors must verify that authors clearly specify the reference point used, the radiographic technique, and the software employed, as inconsistent methodology is a common manuscript deficiency. Crestal bone height should not be confused with 'crestal bone loss', which refers to a change in that measurement.
