A forensic and paediatric dental research method using tooth development stages or eruption patterns to estimate a subject's chronological age.

Dental age assessment involves evaluating dental maturity—through radiographic analysis of tooth mineralisation stages, root development, or eruption status—as a proxy for chronological age. Widely used methods include the Demirjian method, the Willems modification, and the London Atlas. In forensic odontology and paediatric dental research, editors should verify that the specific method and reference population used are clearly cited, as accuracy varies across ethnic groups and skeletal maturity indicators. The term 'dental age' is distinct from 'skeletal age' (determined by bone development) and 'chronological age' (actual age in years), and manuscripts must not conflate these constructs. Statistical agreement between estimated dental age and chronological age is typically reported using intraclass correlation coefficients or mean absolute error.
