Electric Pulp Testing (EPT) is a standardised diagnostic technique in which a small electric current is delivered to the enamel surface of a tooth via a probe, stimulating A-delta nerve fibres in the dental pulp. A positive response—perceived by the patient as a tingling or mild pain—indicates the presence of functional sensory innervation, though it does not directly confirm vascular vitality. In dental research manuscripts, EPT results are typically reported as threshold values (the lowest stimulus level producing a response) or as positive/negative findings. Editors should ensure that the device make and model, electrode placement, and patient calibration methods are stated in the methods section. EPT is commonly contrasted with thermal pulp testing and laser Doppler flowmetry in comparative diagnostic accuracy studies.
