Odontoblast

A specialised mesenchymal cell of the dental pulp periphery that synthesises and deposits dentine matrix throughout the life of a tooth.

Full Definition

Odontoblasts are terminally differentiated cells derived from cranial neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme that line the outer surface of the dental pulp and are responsible for primary, secondary, and tertiary dentine formation. Each odontoblast extends a cytoplasmic process—the odontoblast process—into the dentinal tubules, which plays a role in the hydrodynamic theory of dentine hypersensitivity. Unlike ameloblasts, odontoblasts persist throughout the life of the tooth and can produce reactionary or reparative tertiary dentine in response to carious attack or restorative procedures. In dental research, odontoblast biology underpins studies on pulp-dentine complex responses to biomaterials, caries progression, and pulp regeneration strategies. Editors should distinguish 'odontoblast' from 'ameloblast' (enamel-forming) and 'cementoblast' (cementum-forming), as their functions are frequently conflated in non-specialist writing.
