A standardised linear measurement of alveolar bone height assessed from a dental radiograph, used as an outcome variable in periodontal, implant, and orthodontic research.

Full Definition

Radiographic bone level (RBL) refers to the distance from a fixed anatomical reference point—typically the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) or the implant platform—to the most coronal point of the alveolar bone crest, as measured on a calibrated dental radiograph. It is a key surrogate outcome in periodontal and implant research, with changes in RBL over time used as a proxy for bone loss or gain. Editors must confirm that manuscripts clearly state the reference point used, the measurement software or method, and whether measurements were taken by calibrated examiners, together with intraexaminer and interexaminer reliability statistics. 'Radiographic bone loss' and 'radiographic bone level' are related but not identical terms; the former is a change score derived from serial measurements of the latter.
