Sialometry

The clinical measurement of salivary flow rate, conducted under standardised conditions to assess salivary gland function.

Full Definition

Sialometry is the objective quantification of saliva production, typically expressed in millilitres per minute (mL/min), and is used in dental research to diagnose and monitor hyposalivation, assess the impact of medications or systemic disease on salivary gland function, and evaluate treatment outcomes. Whole saliva can be measured under unstimulated (resting) or stimulated (e.g., chewing paraffin wax) conditions. Editors must verify that manuscripts specify clearly whether unstimulated or stimulated whole saliva was collected, as reference ranges differ substantially between these methods. Sialometry should not be confused with sialography, which is a radiographic imaging technique for salivary ducts.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify whether unstimulated or stimulated flow was measured, as these are not interchangeable in results reporting. Do not confuse with 'sialography' (a duct imaging technique) or 'sialendoscopy' (a duct visualisation procedure).
