Overbite

The vertical overlap of the upper central incisors over the lower central incisors, measured in millimetres or as a percentage of lower incisor crown height.

Overbite measures the extent to which the maxillary incisors vertically overlap the mandibular incisors when the teeth are in maximum intercuspation. A normal overbite is approximately 2–4 mm; a deep overbite may cause palatal trauma, while an open bite (zero or negative overbite) can impair incisal function. The term is ubiquitous in orthodontic records, restorative planning documents, and dental trauma assessments. Editors must treat 'overbite' and 'overjet' as distinct measurements; conflating the two is a common error in lay and non-specialist dental writing.
