Ectopic Eruption
The emergence of a tooth in an abnormal position or path, commonly affecting upper first molars and maxillary canines, and frequently requiring interceptive orthodontic intervention.

Ectopic eruption occurs when a tooth deviates from its expected eruption path, erupting in or toward an incorrect position in the arch. The maxillary first permanent molar and maxillary canine are the most frequently affected teeth. In molar ectopic eruption, the erupting molar may resorb the distal root of the adjacent second primary molar. Editors should note that 'ectopic' is an adjective modifying 'eruption' and must not be used as a noun (e.g., 'an ectopic' is incorrect in this context). It should not be confused with impaction, which implies obstruction preventing eruption.
