Orthopedic Force

A heavy, intermittent or sustained force applied to the dentofacial skeleton with the intention of modifying bone or suture growth rather than moving individual teeth.

Full Definition

Orthopedic force, in the context of dentofacial orthopedics, refers to magnitudes of force (typically 300–1000 g or more) that are intended to stimulate sutural or condylar adaptation, redirecting jaw growth rather than merely tipping or translating teeth. Devices such as facemasks, headgear, and palatal expanders deliver orthopedic forces. Editors must distinguish this term from 'orthodontic force', which describes lighter forces used for tooth movement. In American English usage, the preferred spelling is 'orthopedic'; British publications may use 'orthopaedic'. Consistency within a document is mandatory.
