Panoramic Radiograph
A single extraoral dental X-ray image that depicts both dental arches, the alveolar bone, and associated craniofacial structures in a flattened two-dimensional view.
Full Definition
The panoramic radiograph (also called orthopantomogram or OPG) is a standard diagnostic image in orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic records. It is produced by a rotating X-ray source that simultaneously captures the maxilla, mandible, temporomandibular joints, nasal fossae, and maxillary sinuses in a single exposure. It allows assessment of tooth presence, position, root morphology, bone levels, and pathology. Editors must be aware of the common abbreviation OPG (from orthopantomogram) and the less common DPT (dental panoramic tomograph), ensuring the chosen abbreviation is defined at first use.
Usage
Usage note: Preferred abbreviation is OPG in most English-language journals. Define at first use. Do not confuse with cephalometric radiograph.
