Anatomic subunits are discrete facial regions defined by consistent skin texture, thickness, color, and natural boundary lines that guide optimal reconstructive approaches in facial surgery. These subunits include areas such as the nasal dorsum, nasal alae, upper and lower eyelids, cheeks, forehead, and chin. Understanding subunit principles allows surgeons to plan reconstructions that respect natural facial contours and boundaries, often achieving superior cosmetic results by replacing entire subunits rather than patching defects. When defects involve more than 50% of a subunit, complete subunit replacement frequently provides better aesthetic outcomes than partial reconstruction.
