A melanocytic nevus represents a benign clonal proliferation of melanocytes that can occur anywhere on the body. These lesions may be present at birth (congenital nevi) or develop throughout life (acquired nevi). Histologically, nevi are classified as junctional, compound, or intradermal based on the location of melanocyte nests. While most nevi remain stable and benign, certain features such as asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter changes, or evolution warrant biopsy to exclude melanoma. Large congenital nevi carry increased malignant potential and may require prophylactic excision. Clinical monitoring and photographic documentation aid in detecting changes suggestive of malignant transformation.
