A punch biopsy is a diagnostic procedure performed using a circular cutting instrument (punch) that ranges from 2-8mm in diameter. The technique removes a cylindrical core of tissue extending through the epidermis, dermis, and into the subcutaneous fat. This method provides excellent tissue architecture preservation for histopathological examination and is commonly used for diagnosing skin lesions when the entire lesion cannot be excised. The procedure requires local anesthesia and typically heals by secondary intention or with simple suturing.
