Tissue Viability Assessment

Clinical evaluation of tissue perfusion and healing potential prior to reconstructive surgery.

Full Definition

Tissue viability assessment involves the systematic evaluation of blood supply, tissue oxygenation, and healing capacity of skin and underlying structures before reconstructive procedures. This assessment includes examination of capillary refill, tissue color, temperature, and response to pressure. It is particularly crucial when planning flaps or grafts in areas with compromised circulation, such as the lower extremities or previously irradiated tissue.

In Context

  • "Tissue viability assessment revealed adequate perfusion for local flap reconstruction." — Pre-operative evaluation note
  • "The surgeon postponed reconstruction pending improved tissue viability assessment results." — Surgical consultation
