Dermatofibroma

A common benign fibrous nodule of the dermis, most frequently found on the lower limbs, that displays a characteristic dimple sign on lateral compression.

Full Definition

A dermatofibroma is a firm, benign dermal papule or nodule composed of fibroblasts and histiocytes, typically measuring 5–10 mm in diameter. It most commonly appears on the legs of young to middle-aged adults and is characterised by the 'dimple' or 'dimpling' sign—central depression upon lateral pinching—which aids clinical diagnosis. Histologically it shows epidermal hyperplasia overlying a fibrohistiocytic proliferation. Editors should note that dermatofibroma is a single word (no hyphen) and should not be abbreviated in formal documents. Its distinction from dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is clinically critical and must be accurately reflected in reports.

Usage

Usage note: Do not confuse or abbreviate in ways that could be read as 'DFSP' (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans), a malignant entity with very different management.
