Dermoscopy
Pronunciation: dur-MOS-koh-pee
A non-invasive diagnostic technique using a handheld illuminated magnifier to examine skin lesions at 10× magnification.
Full Definition
Dermoscopy (also called dermatoscopy or epiluminescence microscopy) is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows clinicians to examine pigmented and non-pigmented skin lesions with magnification and cross-polarised or immersion lighting. It significantly improves diagnostic accuracy for melanoma and other skin cancers beyond naked-eye examination. In editorial contexts, the spelling 'dermoscopy' is preferred over 'dermatoscopy' in most international journals, though both are acceptable. Reports typically distinguish between dermoscopic patterns such as atypical network, regression structures, and vascular patterns.
Usage
Usage note: Prefer 'dermoscopy' over 'dermatoscopy' when standardising to international dermatology journal style. Avoid confusing the technique (dermoscopy) with the instrument (dermatoscope).
In Context
- "Dermoscopy revealed an atypical pigment network at the lesion border, prompting excision." — Clinical case report
- "The manuscript used 'dermatoscopy' and 'dermoscopy' interchangeably; the editor standardized to 'dermoscopy' throughout." — Editorial correction note
