Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most common form of panniculitis and represents a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to various antigenic stimuli including streptococcal infection, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain medications. Clinically the nodules evolve through bruise-like colour changes over two to six weeks without ulceration. For editors, the two-word Latin construction should be retained in full on first use; 'EN' is an acceptable subsequent abbreviation in clinical documents. It must not be confused with erythema multiforme, which involves different morphology (target lesions) and pathomechanism. EN commonly appears in rheumatology, respiratory, and dermatology correspondence.
