balloon aortic valvuloplasty

Percutaneous procedure using balloon inflation to relieve aortic valve stenosis.

Full Definition

A palliative cardiac catheterization procedure involving the inflation of a large balloon within the stenotic aortic valve to fracture calcific deposits and improve valve opening. In emergency cardiology, balloon aortic valvuloplasty may be performed as a bridge to surgical or transcatheter valve replacement in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are too unstable for definitive therapy. The procedure provides temporary symptom relief but does not offer long-term durability.

Usage

Usage note: May be abbreviated as BAV in subsequent references.
