cardiogenic shock

Life-threatening condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet body's needs.

Full Definition

Cardiogenic shock is a clinical syndrome characterized by inadequate tissue perfusion due to cardiac dysfunction, despite adequate intravascular volume. It is defined hemodynamically by sustained hypotension (systolic BP <90 mmHg), elevated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (>18 mmHg), and reduced cardiac index (<2.2 L/min/m²). Cardiogenic shock most commonly complicates acute myocardial infarction but can result from other causes including acute heart failure, mechanical complications, or arrhythmias. Mortality remains high despite advances in mechanical circulatory support devices.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other shock types by hemodynamic profile; specify underlying etiology.
