hyperacute T waves

Tall, peaked T waves representing the earliest ECG manifestation of acute myocardial infarction.

Full Definition

Hyperacute T waves are abnormally tall and peaked T waves that represent the earliest electrocardiographic manifestation of acute myocardial ischemia, often appearing within minutes of coronary occlusion and before ST-segment elevation develops. These T waves are typically symmetric, pointed, and disproportionately large compared to the QRS complex amplitude. Recognition of hyperacute T waves is clinically crucial as they may be the only ECG finding in the early stages of STEMI, and their presence should prompt immediate evaluation and treatment even in the absence of ST elevation.

Usage note: Distinguish from hyperkalemic T waves which are typically narrower and more symmetric.
