Percutaneous ventricular assist device providing temporary mechanical circulatory support.
Full Definition
A catheter-based mechanical circulatory support device that is inserted percutaneously and positioned across the aortic valve to provide left ventricular support. The Impella device uses a continuous flow pump to unload the left ventricle and augment cardiac output in patients with cardiogenic shock or high-risk procedures. Different sizes are available (2.5, CP, 5.0) providing varying levels of hemodynamic support.
